CLAIRE: WHAT’S IN A NAME
We name our satellites after the children of our team members not to anthropomorphize them, but rather as a demonstration that GHGSat is about more than just revenue. Our goal is to build a better future for the next generation and the many more that will come by helping mitigate the negative impacts of climate change with satellite technology.
There are a lot of ethical considerations when it comes to climate change. For example, it disproportionately impacts economically disadvantaged communities. In addition, it can take decades for its impact to be felt fully, so future generations pay a much greater price for decisions made today.
When viewed through this lens, having a low-cost system to monitor emissions from all over the world helps to mitigate the detrimental effects to both local and global communities, in the present and in the future.
Claire will soon be joined by Iris, who is also named after the child of one of our team members. Eventually, Claire and Iris will be two among many in our planned constellation of high-resolution emissions monitoring satellites.
