GHGSat’s 2022 Methane Emissions Report shares key results and insights from the world’s first – and only high-resolution methane monitoring satellite system.

Last May, we successfully launched three satellites, doubling the size of our constellation. Expanding our fleet enabled both higher revisit frequency and greater coverage resulting in us measuring more emissions in 2022 than in the previous 5 years combined.

In the process, we fine-tuned our offshore monitoring expertise, measured numerous world-first emission events, and partnered with global organizations such as the International Methane Emissions Observatory, the International Energy Agency and S&P Global, to open our data to wider analysis.

Key Findings 2022

Data represented in these findings is from our constellation of high-resolution satellites.

  • 25% increase in emissions detected compared to 2021.
  • 179 MTCO2e Total methane emissions detected in 2022, equivalent to approximately 38.6 million cars driving on the road for a year.
  • Over 500k sites observed across 69 countries.
  • Oil & Gas accounted for over half of all emissions observed and 47% of the volume of emissions measured.
  • China tops the list for coal mine emissions measurements at 33% of the volume of emissions observed.
  • Observations over landfills nearly doubled compared to 2021, performing over 1,100 observations.

Six more satellites will launch in 2023, one of which (GHGSat-C10) will host our first sensor dedicated to carbon dioxide emissions monitoring.
