The United States Commits to Reducing Domestic Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 50%

The United States has committed to a domestic net greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 50% below 2005 levels by 2023 and is targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this ambitious target, the Biden-Harris Administration released its National Strategy to Advance an Integrated U.S. Greenhouse Gas Measurement, Monitoring, and Information System, emphasizing the need to improve atmospheric-based greenhouse gas quantification approaches including satellite and aircraft capabilities.

GHGSat’s ability to monitor methane and carbon dioxide emissions at the individual facility level will assist the Strategy’s aim to accelerate efforts to diminish America’s carbon footprint and achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

Developed by the Greenhouse Gas Monitoring and Measurement Interagency Working Group, this Strategy will integrate the efforts across various U.S. Government agencies to provide high-quality greenhouse gas information by establishing the following:

  • A conceptual framework for a U.S. GHG Measurement, Monitoring, and Information System (GHGMMIS).
  • A set of national objectives to focus collective GHG measurement and monitoring efforts for federal and non-federal entities.
  • A phased implementation approach that maximizes the use of mature capabilities today while paving the way for future GHGMMIS advancements.

The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center will promote coordination across federal, non-federal, domestic, and international organizations to improve accessibility to greenhouse gas data and modelling capabilities. The Strategy recognizes the need for activity-level estimates and atmospheric-level measurements, making the case for satellite and aerial measurements. As the first company to transition from research and development to implementing operational satellite monitoring for methane and carbon dioxide at scale, GHGSat is uniquely positioned to enable the Strategy in meeting its ambitious goal of accelerating greenhouse gas reduction and promoting scientific innovation and transparency throughout the government with abundant and timely independent data.

GHGSat has been selected by NASA, one of four U.S. federal partner agencies of the GHG Centre, to provide its high-resolution greenhouse gas emissions data in support of Earth science research under the space agency’s Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition (CSDA) program.

The integration and enhancement of GHG measurement and monitoring tools are critical in achieving climate neutrality in the United States. By quickly implementing the new Strategy, and utilizing advanced satellite and aircraft technology like ours, we can work towards a cleaner future, together.
