For every day at COP27, in partnership with Bloomberg Green, GHGSat will publish an emission detection, driving awareness of industrial methane leaks from facilities around the world in high resolution. GHGSat monitors methane emissions – both big and small – from onshore and offshore facilities – every day.

Sunday, November 6, 2022 – As world leaders meet at COP27 to address climate change challenges, GHGSat is contributing its unique satellite data and emissions monitoring expertise to help commercial and government partners reduce human-made methane pollution.
GHGSat satellites detected 6 emissions from an oil & gas facility in China, with a combined emission rate of 4,477kg/h of methane. Fossil fuel production is a major contributor to methane emissions and represents 85% of GHGSat satellite emission measurements since COP26

Monday, November 7, 2022 – GHGSat high-resolution satellites captured a landfill in India leaking methane. Waste management sites and landfills are known to emit methane – and GHGSat data shows these sites are often persistent emitters, accounting for around 18% of all methane emissions. If we can track the source of leaks, it’s possible to convert the gas into new energy opportunities for local communities. Satellites offer accurate data on landfill emissions around the world and support a better understanding of their contribution to climate change.
In 2020, as a commitment to COP26, GHGSat created PULSE, a unique interactive map of global monthly averaged methane concentrations, designed to spark discussion and awareness of this potent greenhouse gas. The public response was fantastic, so this year, we’ve upgraded the tool, integrating it into our professional-grade SPECTRA emissions intelligence platform. This means we can now show weekly, rather than monthly, methane concentrations over the same 2km x 2km grid worldwide

Tuesday, November 8, 2022 – Coal methane detections are rising. GHGSat satellites have measured nearly double the number of emissions in 2022 compared to all of 2021. Methane is a by-product of coal production, with gas released as seams are opened and vented for safety reasons. Seen here is an emission from a coal mine in New Mexico, USA, the very same site GHGSat’s first satellite had detected emissions from six years ago. Our satellite data can support new mitigation projects and industry benchmarking for coal mine operators.
GHGSat joined forces with the Global Methane Hub and SRON (Netherlands Space Agency), working with NGOs and local partners to improve our understanding of these sites, initiate discussion and encourage action at the local level to mitigate emissions. Accurate data can help operators build the case for Landfill Gas to Energy projects – such as the one at Monterrey, New Mexico, which captures around 9,000 tonnes of methane per year [ref] and converts it into electricity to power the facility, Monterrey’s local light-rail network and city lighting at night.

Wednesday, November 9, 2022 – COP27 is taking place at a time when energy security is at the top of the political agenda. But with the clock ticking fast on the 1.5°C temperature rise limit, it’s more important than ever to keep track of fossil fuel emissions. With more satellites in orbit this year, we dramatically increased the number of emissions detected from the oil & gas sector. Today’s emission is from Iran – a country with one of the largest deposits of natural gas reserves in the world.

Thursday, November 10, 2022 – Last year, 125 countries committed to dramatically cutting methane emissions as they signed the Global Methane Pledge to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030. The focus at COP27 is turning commitment into action. from Tropomi onboard the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite has been used to detect methane emissions over Europe’s largest methane-emitting coal mines. If combined with GHGSat high-resolution satellites that offer greater precision, there is a huge opportunity for impact.

Friday, November 11, 2022 – In 2020, Canada’s waste sector was responsible for about 28% of its total methane emissions – with municipal solid waste landfills the largest contributor. Plans to reduce emissions from landfills are part of the country’s methane strategy, and accurate measurement and monitoring will be essential to support policy and track progress. As seen here, GHGSat’s high-resolution satellites detected a landfill in Quebec, Canada, emitting methane at a rate of 1,185 kg/h. If the site emitted at this rate for a year, it would be the equivalent of 55,000 cars on the road for one year.
