Every year, emissions from landfills, a significant source of the potent greenhouse gas methane, contribute significantly to climate change. According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), landfills account for roughly 14.7 million tons of methane emissions annually in the US alone. “We need to know where to look,” emphasized Antoine Lair of Veolia Inc. Satellites can frequently monitor landfill sites anywhere around the world, pinpointing emission sources down to 25m resolution. This helps aid in the refinement of emissions models for better targeting of mitigation efforts. Existing models now mostly rely on estimated emissions. The focus on quantifying emission sources can optimize the landfill operations.

But the benefits go beyond just pinpointing emission sources. Amy Banister from WM highlighted the importance of high-resolution data for taking swift action. “We continue to grow our renewable natural gas portfolio,” she says, highlighting the need for prompt mitigation strategies that contributes to WM’s goal of beneficial use of captured gas.

High-resolution data empowers faster action, but robust methane mitigation requires more. As Kait Siegel of the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) says, “Our role is pushing for technology and policy changes that mitigate methane emissions.” CATF leverages both high-resolution satellite data and ground measurements to gather comprehensive data, filling the gap left by traditional methods. This empowers policymakers to take concrete action against this invisible threat.
