Trends in Global Methane Emissions

Methane emissions are a significant contributor to climate change, and reducing these emissions is crucial in the fight against climate change. Accurately measuring methane emissions from various sources, including oil and gas operations and landfills is essential in identifying areas that require attention and tracking the progress of emission reduction efforts.

GHGSat offers an annual report on Methane Emissions which provides insight into global methane emissions and trends. In the fourth quarter of 2022, we achieved remarkable milestones in our emission measurements and observations. We conducted over 350,000 measurements of industrial facilities in 58 countries, both onshore and offshore. The report highlighted an increase in emissions from coal mines, likely due to the growing demand for coal amidst the global energy crisis. Additionally, the detection of emissions from oil and gas facilities in the United States was notably high, underscoring the need for stronger methane regulations and monitoring. The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing updated standards, including routine monitoring of well sites and the implementation of a super-emitter response program, which can utilize third-party data.

GHGSat’s satellites play a crucial role in identifying methane enhancements and hotspots, enabling high-resolution observations to pinpoint emission sources. Our satellites identified nearly 10 times more emissions globally in Q4 than what was captured by public satellite data, showcasing the effectiveness of our approach.

The findings of this report highlight the need for continued efforts to reduce methane emissions, particularly from the oil and gas sector. The observed reduction in emissions from oil and gas operations is promising and suggests that emission reduction measures such as improving operational processes and switching to cleaner energy sources are effective. However, more needs to be done to achieve substantial reductions in methane emissions from all sources.

This effort is crucial in achieving the target of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C, as outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
