GHGSat’s Two New Methane-Monitoring Satellites, Eleonore (C-16) and Nuray (C-17), Will Soon Take Flight
GHGSat, the global leader in emissions-monitoring technology, will launch two new methane-detecting satellites this July, adding fresh capacity to its constellation to meet industry demand.
Once launched, the two satellites, named Eleonore (C-16) and Nuray (C-17), will be part of the world’s largest fleet of methane-monitoring satellites, which together observe millions of sites annually. Purpose-built to support industry operators in emissions mitigation efforts, GHGSat’s constellation pinpoints the exact source of an emission and is uniquely capable of daily revisits to industrial sites. For the carbon-intensive industries and governments racing to control and reduce emissions, that faster cadence translates directly into faster action.
In a tradition the company holds dear, every satellite in GHGSat’s constellation is named in honour of the child of a GHGSat employee. It is a deliberate gesture; a reminder that the mission to reduce methane emissions is ultimately an investment in the world those children will grow up in.
Eleonore (C-16) is named after the daughter of Ewan Tarrant, Software Team Lead at GHGSat. While at first 4-year-old Eleonore was concerned that she herself would be launched into space, she is now excited to have a namesake in orbit. For Tarrant, the launch of C-16 is a tangible connection with GHGSat’s mission. “It reminds me of the real underlying purpose of our work: to play our part to limit the impact of climate change for future generations.”
Nuray (C-17) is named for the 13-year-old daughter of MENA Sales Director Mamdouh El Oufy. Having her namesake in orbit holds special significance for their family. “Nuray is a Turkish name meaning bright moon—so her name is originally linked to space! Having a satellite named after her increases her bond to space, technology, and the environment. It makes her feel that she is part of a bigger scope than herself.”
