GHGSat’s SPECTRA was the winner of the Climate category in Fast Company’s prestigious 2023 World Changing Ideas Awards. The World Changing Ideas Awards 2023 honor the businesses, policies, projects, and concepts that are actively engaged and deeply committed to pursuing innovation in solving global challenges and making the world more equitable, accessible, and sustainable. The Climate category of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards recognizes projects designed to mitigate the impacts of climate change, limit emissions, help build resiliency, or otherwise help solve issues related to the climate crisis.
GHGSat’s emissions intelligence platform, SPECTRA, seamlessly integrates measurements from third-party satellites with those from GHGSat’s own constellation of 9 satellites. Customers can see emissions within large, pre-determined zones such as major oil and gas basins and active coal mining territories. This will help organizations and governments benchmark their performance and monitor progress on their emission reduction commitments.
The free SPECTRA subscription service allows users to access GHGSat’s unique interactive map to see worldwide methane concentrations and a gallery of methane observations measured by its high-resolution satellite constellation. Data subscribers with access to expanded functionalities and features can analyse GHGSat’s emission data with third-party information to advise on mitigation strategies and emissions risks. By making emissions data more accessible, GHGSat is raising awareness and encouraging global action on this potent greenhouse gas.
Stephane Germain, CEO of GHGSat: “It’s fantastic to have GHGSat’s SPECTRA recognized as a ‘Fast Company World Changing Idea.’ SPECTRA is designed to answer the needs of our customers by providing critical emissions intelligence and context to take effective, measurable action. It’s only by seeing emissions that we find solutions to reduce them. Global transparency in methane emissions is available today, and we want to drive the world to action – now.”
The awards, which are now in their seventh year, saw winners and finalists selected from across the globe from the transportation, education, food, politics, technology sectors and more.
“It’s thrilling to see the creativity and innovation that are so abundant among this year’s honorees,” says Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan. “While it’s easy to feel discouraged by the state of the world, the entrepreneurs, companies, and non-profits featured in this package show the limitless potential to address society’s most urgent problems. Our journalists have highlighted some of the most exciting and impactful work being done today—from housing to equity to sustainability—and we look forward to seeing not only how these projects evolve but how they inspire others to develop solutions of their own.”
GHGSat was previously selected as a finalist in the AI and Data category of Fast Company’s prestigious World Changing Ideas Awards in 2021.
