GHGSat Wins SpaceNews Icon Award for Sustainability & Environmental Impact

GHGSat, the global leader in satellite emissions monitoring, is proud to announce that it has been honored with a prestigious SpaceNews Icon Award. The company was recognized under the Sustainability and Environmental Impact category for its role in driving global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The SpaceNews Icon Awards celebrate achievements that are shaping the direction of the space industry. Nominated organizations and individuals exemplify excellence in advancing space exploration, sustainability, and innovation. This year’s Icon list spans remarkable accomplishments, from groundbreaking international partnerships to technological breakthroughs and commercial successes.

GHGSat’s satellite constellation has redefined environmental monitoring by tracing greenhouse gas emissions to individual industrial facilities from space for the first time and monitoring sites at an unmatched near-daily cadence. In 2023 alone, GHGSat’s fleet of satellites took more than 3 million observations around the world. With a recent announcement of plans to near-double its constellation by the end of 2026, GHGSat continues to rapidly expand, enabling more frequent emissions monitoring. With this sharp growth, GHGSat’s constellation will be able to further illuminate the true prevalence of global methane and carbon dioxide emissions and enable timely action.

“GHGSat was founded to use space technology to help industrial operators and governments understand, control, and ultimately reduce greenhouse gas emissions back on Earth,” said Stephane Germain, CEO of GHGSat. “This award is a testament to GHGSat’s success in pioneering a whole new market segment in commercial Earth observation by working as a trusted partner with our customers to drive those emissions reductions.”

Since the launch of GHGSat’s first satellite in 2016, data from GHGSat’s constellation has been used to pinpoint and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions around the world. To date since beginning operations, GHGSat’s satellite constellation has enabled the mitigation of emissions equivalent to taking 3.4 million cars off of U.S. roads for a year. By empowering industry operators and governments with accurate and precise data, GHGSat has become an essential partner in mitigating greenhouse gases through innovative technology and collaboration.

The SpaceNews Icon Award not only highlights GHGSat’s contributions to sustainability but also underscores the importance of using space responsibly to benefit the planet. GHGSat remains committed to expanding its capabilities and working alongside its partners to support global efforts to achieve net zero emissions.
