For its crucial role in supporting the emergency response to a 2024 explosion at a gas field site, GHGSAT has been awarded a Certificate of Gratitude by the Uzbekistan Minister of Energy.
The recognition acknowledges the value of data from GHGSat’s pioneering satellite constellation, which provided critical insights on methane emissions following the explosion, enabling time-sensitive infrastructure assessments and the mitigation of adverse environmental impacts.
GHGSat’s constellation of satellites is designed to reliably pinpoint the source of methane emissions, often down to single pieces of equipment. Due to the size of its fleet of satellites, GHGSat is uniquely capable of revisiting sites near-daily, the highest frequency in the field, to monitor for emissions.
Immediately following the explosion, GHGSat deployed its high-resolution satellites to monitor the affected site. These detections yielded vital insights into the extent of the damaged infrastructure, helping authorities to make informed decisions and develop a data-driven response. Ultimately, the operator confirmed that the damaged infrastructure was addressed.
Through these efforts, GHGSat identified and measured several large methane plumes. If left unattended for one month, the emissions would have meant significant financial losses, alongside negative environmental impacts.
GHGSat’s efforts were conducted in collaboration with Vema Carbon, which provided support with on-the-ground methane detection using LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) technologies, which confirmed the accuracy of the detections. This combined approach—leveraging both satellite-based and ground-level observations—ensured a more detailed understanding of the emissions impact.
Methane emissions monitoring plays a critical role in emergency response, as the presence of methane leaks can be a signal of damaged infrastructure. By tracking methane emissions, operators can assess infrastructural integrity and prioritize repair resources to prevent safety hazards, environmental impacts, and financial losses.
