[London, UK] — GHGSat’s pioneering high-resolution carbon dioxide monitoring satellite, Vanguard, has been named Innovation of the Year of the UK Green Business Awards. This annual initiative from BusinessGreen honors impactful contributions to global sustainability efforts.
Vanguard is the first-ever high-resolution sensor dedicated to CO2 launched in space. Its patented remote-sensing technology is based on the company’s methane monitoring sensor, and scans areas at a 25m resolution to track CO2 emissions at the facility level. This data drives a better understanding of emissions in industries such as power generation, steel making, aluminum smelting and cement production, enabling benchmarking of companies and industries for emissions reductions.

At their launch last November, Vanguard and its two methane emission monitoring siblings Juba and Elliot joined a fleet of nine other GHGSat satellites in orbit, built to measure methane emissions. While Vanguard draws on the optical design and patented infrared sensor of these satellites, it is tuned to carbon dioxide’s specific wavelengths. In 2023, insights from GHGSat’s satellite constellation helped to mitigate six Mt of CO2e of methane emissions, equivalent to removing over 1.4M cars from the road for a year. Vanguard will help industry and government achieve and scale these impacts for carbon dioxide emissions.
The UK Green Business Awards celebrate the United Kingdom’s most innovative companies, projects, and campaigns creating environmental impact. Judges highlighted GHGSat’s “impressive satellite innovation, huge impact, and enormous future potential” as the rationale for selecting Vanguard as Innovation of the Year, one of the contest’s most competitive categories.
