GHGSat at the forefront of the inaugural White House Methane Summit

On Wednesday, July 26, GHGSat participated in the first-ever White House Methane Summit. As the first company to make the leap from R&D to the operational deployment of satellites for methane at scale, we’re honored to have been invited. With nine satellites already in orbit – and the addition of three more sensors expected to join later this year – GHGSat already works extensively with operators to provide actionable intelligence on their emissions. We’re excited to bring this experience to help the Biden-Harris Administration work with industry to meet their ambitious climate goals.

The urgency of addressing methane emissions cannot be overstated, as the gas is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the near-term and a leading driver in climate change. GHGSat’s ability to detect and measure methane emissions routinely at a facility level empowers industries and governments to take swift action to address leaks and reduce their environmental impact. The Methane Summit emphasized the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to partnering with technology companies like GHGSat, to collaborate on innovative solutions and technologies that can further enhance methane detection and reduction efforts across industries.

GHGSat’s Role in the Mitigating the Impacts of Climate Change

During the Methane Summit, the establishment of a new Cabinet-level Methane Task Force, a whole-of-government approach to advancing methane leak detection and data transparency, was announced by the Biden-Harris Administration. The Task Force will reinforce the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to reduce global methane emissions 30% by 2030, and work towards executing the U.S. Methane Emissions Reduction Action Plan. GHGSat’s industrial emission monitoring technology is ideally positioned to drive the implementation of the Methane Emissions Reduction Action Plan by providing reliable, independent, validated and affordable data on emissions, enabling industry to make informed decisions while also helping regulators track progress over their jurisdiction.

GHGSat also has extensive experience in coordinating international efforts to mitigate rising methane emissions around the world. GHGSat is proud to be recognized by the U.S. Government for its innovative technology which is poised to play a crucial role in improving public understanding of methane emissions and mitigation action with industrials, forecasting a significant stride towards a greener and more sustainable future. GHGSat’s satellite fleet showcases the power of innovative solutions in reducing emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

By prioritizing methane emissions detection, the Biden-Harris Administration is working to address climate change from the source. GHGSat is currently the only system in space capable of providing frequent and accurate industrial emissions data. With more than 5000-super emitting events detected worldwide and over 179 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent of methane released in 2022, reducing emissions is critical – now more than ever.
