Collaboration is Key: Mitigating Emissions Together
Our collaboration with the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and Carbon Limits proves that satellites possess the remarkable capability to pinpoint major methane emitters within the oil and gas sector. OGCI, a consortium of major oil and gas companies, provided industry knowledge and facilitated engagement with local operators. Carbon Limits, a technical consultancy, brought expertise in understanding and mitigating methane emissions in developing countries. The OGCI white paper is a testament to the power of collaboration – pinpointing major methane sources in Algeria, Egypt, and Kazakhstan. GHGSat performed over 530 high-resolution observations during one year over a total of 18 pre-selected sites (six per country), using its own satellites and public satellite data.
Here’s a glimpse into the campaign’s compelling results:
- GHGSat’s satellite technology successfully identified methane plume emitting 75 kg CH4/h to a substantial plume reaching 4,500 kg CH4/h.
- The campaign identified 15 persistent methane sources that were confirmed on the ground, highlighting the ability of satellites to find previously unknown sources
- Mitigated 3 methane plumes, with a combined average emissions rate of 3,200kg/hr.
- The project fostered collaboration between stakeholders, leading to concrete efforts to address these newly identified emissions
