Why use satellites for emissions monitoring?
There are a number of sensor technologies that can be used on site to monitor air pollution. A network of sensor stations can be fixed around a facility or a Dilution Extraction CEMS installed, where probes extract flue gas for analysis. There are several methods of ground-based methane monitoring. Traditionally using teams on-the-ground, maintenance of these continuous emissions monitoring systems can be costly if your facilities are geographically dispersed. Some ground-based methods are limited by their range while others have reliability concerns. GHGSat’s reliability has already been proven and due to the instrument accuracy, our methane detections are actionable, they direct an operator to the location of a leak within a site.

Importance of greenhouse gas mitigation
GHG emissions standards and regulations are strengthening
A sustained, coordinated focus on the global monitoring of greenhouse gas concentrations is essential in helping regulators and governments fully understand and tackle the drivers of industrial GHG emissions.
Reducing methane is the powerful and strategic measure governments can take now to meet their climate pledges. Around 150 countries have endorsed the Global Methane Pledge with their governments committing to reduce anthropogenic methane emissions by 30% by 2030 (from 2020 levels). But national action plans are not enough, and regulation around methane emissions is being strengthened to drive real change.
The U.S Environmental Protection Agency is strengthening its methane standards and intends to limit the methane emissions from approximately 1 million existing oil and gas rigs across the country – a new ruling that the Biden administration believes will account for around 75% of all methane emissions in the United States.
In late 2022, European member states agreed to new rules to dramatically cut methane emissions. The proposed approach introduces requirements for the oil and gas sector and coal industry to measure, report and verify their methane emissions. EU member states will now negotiate the content of the proposal to agree the final text, building on the vision set out in the EU Methane Strategy in 2020.
