DATA.GS

A Unified Global View of Methane Emissions

Third-Party Global Survey

DATA.GS integrates methane emissions data from public third-party satellite sources into a single unified dataset, processed and validated by GHGSat’s expert team.

It gives organizations access to global methane emissions monitoring without the expertise, infrastructure, or computational resources required to process public satellite data independently.

What Data.GS Enables

Turning Public Data into Emissions Intelligence

Regional emissions visibility: DATA.GS maps large methane emission events and regional hotspots across global asset areas, giving organizations a continuous view of the methane emissions activity occurring in their region of interest.

Risk & awareness monitoring: DATA.GS provides visibility of significant methane emissions detected near facilities or within regions of interest, giving organizations the situational awareness needed to assess whether further investigation or response is required.

Benchmarking & trend analysis: Datasets from multiple public sources are consolidated in one place, enabling baseline establishment and trend tracking across regions and time periods.

Escalation to high-resolution measurement: Where DATA.GS identifies a significant emission event, GHGSat’s DATA.SAT satellite constellation can be tasked for high-resolution follow-up, verifying, attributing, and quantifying the source with facility-level precision.

Within GHGSat’s tiered monitoring framework, DATA.GS provides the broadest layer of global methane emissions monitoring, identifying regional emission events that inform where higher-resolution measurement is directed.

How Data.GS Works

Public Satellites Integrated into a Single Dataset

Public satellite data is valuable but difficult to work with. Each mission uses different formats, resolutions, and processing standards. Extracting meaningful emissions intelligence requires geospatial expertise, specialized analytical capability, and significant computational infrastructure.

GHGSat processes and validates data from four public satellite sources using proprietary algorithms and quality control workflows, integrating outputs into a single standardized dataset. The result is a consistent, comparable view of regional hotspots, persistent emitters, and historical trends, delivered through SPECTRA without the need for in-house geospatial capability.

Used alongside DATA.SAT, DATA.GS expands monitoring coverage and enables two additional capabilities: event-driven tasking, where wide-area observations are used to direct GHGSat’s high-resolution satellites to priority sites for rapid follow-up; and cross-source reconciliation, where third-party records serve as an independent reference to validate and contextualize facility-level measurement data.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Methane data collected by government-operated Earth observation missions focused on advancing climate science and made freely available. Operating at different detection thresholds and resolutions, these instruments map regional emission trends and identify significant industrial emission events at a global scale.

DATA.GS integrates public satellite data with GHGSat’s own observations to provide wide-area regional visibility of large methane emission events. Within GHGSat’s tiered monitoring framework, DATA.GS identifies where emissions are occurring at a regional scale and DATA.SAT pinpoints and quantifies the source at the facility level.

Public satellites detect methane above approximately 1,000 to 3,000 kg/hr. GHGSat’s DATA.SAT detects at 100 kg/hr., making DATA.GS suited to regional event identification, and DATA.SAT to facility-level operational and regulatory response.

No. All data is processed, validated, and standardized by GHGSat before delivery through SPECTRA—no geospatial expertise or computational infrastructure required.

DATA.GS is updated daily with the latest available public satellite data. We provide latency commitments for each satellite from the time of observation to the time the data is available in SPECTRA.
