Empowering UK Government Agencies with High-Resolution Satellite Methane Data

UK SPACE AGENCY & SATELLITE APPLICATIONS CATAPULT | UNITED KINGDOM

UK government agencies historically relied on models and operator-reported data for national methane inventories without access to direct measurements or broad-based spatial coverage.

Funded by the UK Space Agency and delivered in partnership with GHGSat, the Methane Monitoring Data Supply program gave 120 organizations across the UK direct access to high-resolution satellite methane data and targeted training. The UK Environment Agency used the data to identify over 100 emission sites across the agriculture, waste, and oil & gas sectors.

Findings were cited in House of Lords and Climate Change Committee reports, featured in media conferences, and contributed to 23,395 tCO₂e of measurable mitigation. The program established the UK’s satellite methane monitoring ecosystem and was highlighted in the 2023–2024 Environment Agency Chief Regulator’s Report.

Safeguarding Critical National Infrastructure: The Nord Stream Response

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE SECURITY | BALTIC SEA

Following the September 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea, GHGSat provided the first independent quantification of the methane released within a day of the incident. Multiple satellites were rapidly tasked to the leak site, enabling emissions measurement over open water.

The independent data directly supported public communication, international coordination, and mitigation verification. The full findings were subsequently published in Nature. Up to 465,000 tonnes of methane were released; over €11B in infrastructure damage and emergency federal spending followed.

The case demonstrates how continuous satellite monitoring enables governments to detect threats earlier, assess environmental and economic damages faster, and build long-term resilience strategies for critical national infrastructure, including offshore and underwater assets.

Satellite Detection Drives Government Action on Urban Landfill Methane

When ESA satellites detected persistently high methane concentrations over Dhaka, GHGSat tasked its satellite to investigate at the facility level. The observation identified a landfill as a major contributor to the elevated concentrations over the city. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change formed a technical committee to assess GHGSat’s findings and develop solutions to landfill methane in Dhaka—a direct government response driven by independent satellite measurement data.
