Founding Story

75% of Industrial Emissions Had No Independent Monitoring

In 2011, companies mostly self-reported their greenhouse gas emissions using engineering models or estimates and not direct measurements. Ground sensors couldn’t scale globally. Public satellites lacked the resolution to identify individual sources. The result was there were no accurate measurements to take action on.

GHGSat founder Stéphane Germain, an engineer with 30 years in space technology, saw this as a solvable engineering problem. Miniaturize a high-resolution gas detection sensor into a microsatellite that could measure precisely. In 2016, GHGSat launched Claire—the world’s first commercial satellite for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring from space. Complemented from 2022 by aircraft carrying the same patented sensor for facility-level follow-up at even finer resolution.

Our Satellite Constellation

Named for the Next Generation

Every satellite in the GHGSat constellation is named after the name of a GHGSat employee’s child. It’s a reminder of who we’re doing this for. When we talk about reducing emissions, closing leaks, and giving governments the data to act, we’re talking about the world those children will grow up in.

Naming our satellites after them keeps that real. We want those kids to look up one day and know that something carrying their name was part of building a cleaner world.

Our Technology

Pioneering The Most Precise Emissions Detection Available

GHGSat’s satellites and aircraft carry the same patented hyperspectral sensor—a short-wave infrared instrument—that detects the unique spectral signature of greenhouse gases against the Earth’s surface below. From orbit, our satellites detect emissions down to 100 kg/hr at ~25-meter ground sample distance.

From an aircraft, the same sensor reaches 3.5 kg/hr at 1-meter resolution, which is precise enough to identify a single leaking valve within a facility. Both systems are independently validated by peer-reviewed testing by Stanford University; aircraft performance was verified at Colorado State University’s METEC facility, the most rigorous independent methane detection testing environment in North America.

The Team

The People Who Pioneer this Mission

GHGSat pioneered facility-level remote sensing technology. That takes a specific kind of team: engineers who can miniaturize space instruments, data scientists who can attribute a plume to a single valve from 500 km up, and commercial specialists who can translate satellite observations into decisions that operators, regulators, and investors actually use.

We’ve spent 15 years building that team. Today, 150+ people work across our five offices—Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Houston, and London—on problems that range from orbital mechanics to climate impact. What holds it together is a shared conviction that accurate measurement is the foundation of everything else.

Work on Problems That Matter

At GHGSat, the impact is observable. When our satellites detect a leak, operators fix it. When our aircraft survey a landfill, waste managers can see exactly where the gas is escaping. When our data reaches a regulator, policy decisions are grounded in measurement rather than assumption.

We’re growing across engineering, data science, sales, and operations in five offices on three continents. If you want to work on problems that are technically hard, globally important, and genuinely unsolved and want to make an impact, we’d like to talk.
